Mar 12th, 2009 - Wow - need to catch up in here!

I just realized we have not kept this current! Many new things are happening at Misfit Acres. 2009 has proven to be successful for the Sanctuary Horses of Misfit Acres.

We proudly thank the ASPCA for their wonderful grant of $2000, the Carl & Verna Schmidt Foundation for their generous grant of $4000 and their two private donations, and we extend sincere Thank You to the On-Shore League for their kind donation of $2000. We are honored to be named by these organizations and receive their gifts. How exciting it is that little Misfit Acres mission is understood by these foundations.

Feb 5th, 2008 - Fundraiser for Steele County Posse Member (Minnesota)

Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction for Deb Schultz

Family and friends of Deb Schultz of Owatonna have scheduled a Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday,
February 10, 2008, at the Owatonna VFW from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Along with the dinner, we will hold a Silent Auction, with all proceeds going to Deb and her family.

Deb is a life-long member of the Owatonna community and has been active in many equine groups in the area, such as the Owatonna Saddle Club and Steele County Mounted Posse. For several years, Deb also operated a western wear and tack shop here in Owatonna; Deb’s Saddles and Such was located on east Main Street. In addition to many years as an active member of the Steele County Mounted Posse, Deb has coordinated numerous annual training exercises for the Posse members and their horses. These training scenarios have been utilized to help prepare this group for many “real life” events that have occurred throughout our county as well as neighboring counties.

Deb has been dealing with health issues over the past several years and recently has been moved to the Homestead Hospice House to give her the care she needs. This event is to help Deb and her family fund the resources to cover medical expenses incurred during her long illness.

We thank you for your generosity by supporting this event.
** Thrivent Financial will supplement the funds received from this event **

For questions regarding the event, please contact Joe Schwering at 507.456.1559.
Cash donations are being accepted at United Prairie Bank “For the Benefit of Deb Schultz.”
For donations to the Silent Auction, please contact Jodie Briant at 507.330.3697.

Nov 18th, 2007 - Let That Pony Run

Yesterday was one of the worst days of our lives. The vet was here and we helped Cookie to the Rainbow Bridge. We buried her here on the property.

We have been waiting for her to tell us when she had had enough. She laid down on Friday morning and had not gotten up. She lost all interest in her feed and hay. She would not drink any water.

We had 11 girl scouts out here yesterday afternoon and she had no interest in the kids. We took all the indicators to be her way of telling us she was ready.

After we called the doctor I went to the barn to tell her. She reached up with her little nose and touched my nose. I am certain it was a "Thank you".

Misfit Acres now has it's littlest Angel.

Jul 26th, 2007 - Abbey & Tara

This is an urgent plea for help from Misfit Acres - we normally do not make requests like this, but this is a different situation.

On the evening of July 25, Tara and Abbey arrived at Misfit Acres through a group of caring volunteers. Tara, a 20+ yo Arab, and Abbey, a 30+ yo Arab, were no longer wanted by their previous owner. Both girls are terribly in need of weight, vet care, and farrier work. The mares will be temporarily housed with us until they are strong enough to be placed in loving homes - but this going to take a while.

This is an appeal to everyone reading this announcement. We are in desperate need of donations of cash, hay, and senior feed in order to help these girls regain their health. These girls deserve a chance to recover. How could we turn them away in their time of need? Please open up your hearts and help us help Abbey and Tara. No donation is too small.

Photos will be coming soon on our website.

May 16th, 2007 - Thank You Lake Crystal Welcome Memorial Students!!!!!

There is a very special group of young people we would like to tell you about.

On Thursday evening, May 10, Bruce and I were still reeling from losing Trixie the night before. As you know, this has been a hard year for Misfit Acres as we have lost three beautiful horses. It was one of those times where we just do a lot of contemplating that maybe this is just too hard and maybe we shouldn’t do this anymore. I don’t think either of us could really give this up, but the sadness of losing “one of the kids” is pretty strong. Anyway, the phone rang about that time. It was an instructor from Lake Crystal Welcome Memorial School. She explained to Bruce that the students - K - 6 gr - had seen the article about the Sanctuary Horses of Misfit Acres in January. These young people took it upon themselves to make a real difference. They organized a “Pennies for Ponies” drive in their community with all donations going to Misfit Acres. She would be sending a cashier’s check for over $423 for the horses. This arrived on Tuesday.

I swore that Jasmine was behind the man we met at the airport (see “Very Kind Man” entry). And now I am just as certain that Trixie was behind this act of kindness.

Apr 23rd, 2007 - Very Kind Man!

This is still unbelievable for us.

The nite before we left on the trip and Jazzy was having trouble, she stumbled and stepped on my foot.

Of course, at the airport the next day you have to take your shoes off to go thru the security stuff. I was talking to Bruce as we were in line telling him I was not sure I could get my shoe back on afterwards since it had taken quite a bit to get it on in the first place. There was man in line behind us kind of watching. Bruce told him the horse had stepped on my foot the nite before and it was pretty sore.

Later on as we were at the gate waiting to board, a man said "hey how's that foot?" It was the man Bruce had spoken to earlier. I told him not very good! He was asking about what kind of horses we had and how many, etc. I had some Misfit Acres brochures in my bag and handed him one. He was really interested in it. He asked about the horse that stepped on me and we told him we had to put her down - course I am such a softy, you can imagine the tears welling up. Anyway, just as we were to get on the plane, this man handed Bruce some papers. He said he travels for business all the time and gets these free drink vouchers from the airlines and he wanted us to have these. Just as we were all three stepping away to get on the plane, he handed Bruce a rolled up check and said "Take care of the farm". Bruce gave him our most sincere thank you but did not get a chance to look at the check until we were seated. It was for $300.

On the flight we had some drinks. A little later the flight attendant came back and handed Bruce a $20 bill. She said the black man in first class had paid for the drinks that we had already bought and that she was to give Bruce back any money he had spent on drinks. If there was anything further that we wanted, she was to come to him for payment and not take our money.

They were not allowing anyone into first class that did not have a seat so we did not get a chance to personally thank him. The flight attendant told Bruce that the man used to be a professional football player.

We were hoping to catch him at the baggage pick up but he must not have had any luggage to pick up. We didn't see him again.

Pretty Awesome - huh??

Apr 23rd, 2007 - Jasmine - January 9, 2005 - April 12, 2007

Jazzy had been in the barn after her heart attack in January. The vet advised us to keep her on stall rest for a while. Our pastures were so rough from the mud, then cold and then all of the mud again. We had decided she was better off in the barn for a while with her bad leg. She really didn't like being in the barn and loved her afternoon walks around the place. We opened the windows on nicer days, left the radio on, and had a fluorescent lite on at all times. Cookie goes to the barn also over the winter months since she does not get around very well.

Since she really didn't like the barn, we were planning to put Jazzy in the arena while we were gone on the trip. We were hoping the ground would dry out and Bruce could take the skidloader and level everything out in the pastures when we got back. I emptied the arena all out, tore down the round pen, got the water ready for her, hay down, gate across the door so she would have the choice of looking outside if she wanted. But when I got her up there, she was almost unable to walk but insisted on trying to trot around. Almost like she really didn't care about herself any more - just kept trying to trot. It appeared as though she must have stumbled and fell and tore all the ligaments loose on her knee maybe while getting back up. Her left front knee has been arthritic ever since we got her but had been getting worse all along. Now it was really bad. Very swollen and bowed to the point it looked like it could just buckle.

We knew all along that there would come a time she would tell us that she had had enough Her leg was so bowed and seemed so painful. Jazzy was late twenties. We talked about it between the three of us, Derek was there with us. It just seemed like she was telling us that was enough. We made the decision to call the dr to put her down and end all the suffering. I kissed her and held her the whole time. Not really sure but I think the dr left around 8 or so.

Beautiful baby - running free with Dandy at last.

Apr 8th, 2007 - Earth Day

Earth Day is April 22 - a very good time to remind all of us that recycling is extremely important to our environment. There are hundreds of aluminum cans and 20 oz pop bottles that can be collected and recycled for the Sanctuary Horses of Misfit Acres just laying in the ditches.

In the upcoming weeks, we will be organizing a road ditch walk in our area. We invite all of you to do the same. What a great way to help the enviroment and the horses! Please check our "Recycling for Horses" page for more information on how trash can be turned into funding dollars for Misfit Acres.

Jan 29th, 2007 - Saturday's Miracle!!

Nine of us saw a miracle before our eyes on Saturday.

Montana arrived on January 27. He is a big gorgeous boy - very friendly. We were confident that he was going to be the perfect companion for our lonely Jasmine. We walked the horses around in the pasture, let them sniff each other and then walked around again. Things looked like they were going well so we turned them loose. He and Jasmine approached each other and had kind of a little tiff -no big deal. Jasmine suddenly ran over to the fence line by Trixie and Augie. What happened next stunned us all. She climbed up a snow drift and started moving her front legs. It looked for all the world like she was going to try to jump the fenced to get in with Trixie. I ran between the fence line and the snow trying to turn her around away from the fence. Jasmine has never made any attempt to jump - she has a very arthritic front knee. She scrambled in the snow and fell. She did not move. We ran to help her up but she would not even try. Bruce got the skid loader and moved more snow away so we could turn her over. There is a slight hill in the pasture and we wanted to have her attempt to get up on the downhill slant rather than the uphill. She many several attempts to get up after we got the snow moved away. She just could not do it. We let her have rest breaks, we covered her with blankets and tons of encouragement. She started to get very cold - too cold. Our neighbors and Bruce rigged up a sling, got this under her, and raised her to her feet with the skidloader. We (under telephone guidance from our vet) loosened all pressure from the strapping but did not remove it for several minutes. . Once Jasmine realized she was up on her own feet, she got very perky! The guys took the straps off of her slowly and we walked her to the arena. We had been talking with our vet who was on another farm call delivering some calves. He arrived around 5:15. She had already been on her feet for over an hour. Her body temperature was still only 96 degrees. That little girl was cold! Dr did treat for colic as a precautionary measure.

The conclusion seems to be that Jasmine may have had a mild heartattack. This would explain why she made no effort to move when she fell in the snow. Her heart rhythm is not like it should be, but rather skips a little. We are uncertain how long it has been this way. Nothing was noticed this summer when her teeth were floated and the two bad ones removed.

Yesterday we got a small dose of Ace promazine for her from the dr to help keep her from getting so worked up. We took her outside. Crystal and Derek walked her Montana around the pasture for a while. She and Montana did eat together near the fence line for little while.

We are trying to re-introduce them slowly. Maybe everything was just too much for her? Losing Dandy, Montana coming, we don't know. She and Trixie and Augie have kind of been bonding over the fence line since Dandy is gone. Maybe she was jealous because Montana had been over there. We really don't know.

Jasmine is in the barn right now. The dr thought it may be best for her to keep from getting too worked up outside just yet. She hates to be inside too it is a tough call.

We are just so thankful that she is here. No one in the pasture thought we would ever see her upright again. She was giving up. We took turns making sure her head was kept up. Everyone was rubbing her legs trying to warm her. To see the look in her eyes when she realized she was standing, moving one hoof around on the ground - that was a true miracle.

Jan 19th, 2007 - Dandy July 17, 2000 - January 18, 2007

Arriving at Misfit Acres on July 17, 2000, Dandy has crossed to the Rainbow Bridge on January 18, 2007. Bruce was able to spend the last few seconds with her so she did not pass alone. Dandy leaves behind countless broken hearts.

We have always referred to the horse's birthday as the day they arrived. Her age was estimated at 25 - 28 yo when she arrived.

Nov 16th, 2006 - Please Read - How you can help

As a non profit, we are always looking for ways to bring in $$ - any amount. Here are a few ways you can help -

Please use Goodsearch.com (www.goodsearch.com)for all your internet searches. You will be asked to designate a charity. Please select Misfit Acres. By doing so each time you do an internet search one penny will go into Misfit Acres Account. You can even check the balances your self. And as you will see, it adds up!

Please consider helping with our recycling programs. We recycle inkjet cartridges, laser cartridges, and cell phones. Each of these programs has prepaid shipping labels that can be sent to you at no charge to submit your recycling and have the donation credited to Misfit Acres Account.

Please consider signing up at www.terracycle.net to particiapte in the Bottle Brigade. This recycler sends you boxes which hold 70 20 oz pop bottles. Peal the label from the bottle, tape up the box when full and give the box to any UPS driver. When you sign up on the recyclers site, they will ask you which charity you wish to support.

For those of you in our area, please consider dropping off your empty aluminum cans. This is also another great way to help. We make an annual run to the recycling yard in the spring, but collect cans all year round. We hope to be putting up a drop box area in the south east corner of our property soon.

Also, please check our Affilates page - maybe some of your favorite retailers are among those affilates listed.
Thank you everyone!!!

Oct 12, 2006 - Hello!!

Hello !! Welcome!!
Thanks Jeanne for putting this up for us. Through this message board we hope to keep everyone up to date on happenings at Misfit Acres without filling up your emailbox. We also plan to include a few little stories, words of thanks, and tidbits of info.

Right now as the first snow of the season is falling, as is the temperature here in So MN, I am reminded of a word of caution passed on to us we would like to share with you. If you have barn cats, please remove metal food dishes for them this time of year. Last year brought a story to us of a little kitty who apparently had gotten wet paws and, as little kitties will do, got into the dish to eat supper. His paw froze to the metal dish. The owners warmed his paw to free it and tried to warm his paw back up but the little guy didn’t make it. Freak accident - yes, but life with animals can contain a lot of freak accidents. Jody
