April 2011

April showers bring may flowers - or is it the Mayflower? This year is proving to be quite interesting with all the rain and melting snow.

If you have been past Misfit Acres lately, as the snow in the front pasture melts, you will see the mini horses' "island". The area around the round bale feeder -of course - has hay pulled out and all over the ground making a circle around the feeder resembling an island. Just beyond the "island" is all the run-off water making a "moat". The little horses do not like crossing the moat. You certainly cannot resist watching the little heads bobbing up and down at meal times beckoning us to deliver all meals to the island. They know how to get to you. Yup, we deliver ! Abbey on the other hand, will readily cross the moat if it means food and people! She does adore the attention.

BJ continues to improve. He has become incredibly "chatty" with each pound he puts on. He insists on getting the first bite of food from Montana at each meal then goes and looks for his feed pan. By the time Montana puts his ears back at BJ, BJ is already out of reach. But Montana has decided to get BJ back by hogging all the hay when we put a bale out. We have to remember to put the bale into at least 3 piles so the "chasing away" game can be played.

Lucky is shedding totally different this year. Lucky is the type of horse where one day she will not have a winter coat and the next day she will. She has always shedded the very same way - here today, gone the next. Not this year. As she ages, she is turning so white also.

April has been having a great time kicking up her heels this spring. Quite a reach that girl has with those back legs! And let's not forget to throw in a good buck or two.

Augie and Magic are not very happy with the spring conditions. Their pasture has a LOT of snow to melt yet condensing the "move around area" compared to what is generally is in the summer time. Being one of the lower spots on the property, it gathers lots of water too. Soon boys - very soon - things will be better.

Acura had a scary episode one evening. She went into a sneezing fit like we have never seen a dog do! Afterwards, she could not hold up her head. We found a "bulging" on her neck which resulted in a trip to the doctor's office on a Saturday evening. Doctor gave her two injections to ease the pain of the strain and also set medication home for her. Poor little girl was so groggy and tried hard to fight off the affects. Once she finally did drift off to sleep, she slept until late Sunday afternoon. After a couple days, she is back to her happy little self again with the tail wagging like crazy.

Misfit Acres raised almost $1000 at the Wells Gun & Trade Show in March!! Thanks to Steve & Laura for their volunteer help. We could not have done everything without you.

Next stop for Misfit Acres fundraising ventures is a new event to be help in St. Peter at the Nicollet County Fairgrounds on April 30. This is a special fundraising event for Multiple Schlorosis featuring vendors, bake sale, and auction. We have always wanted to attend a St. Peter event but have not been able to make the date work. More information on this special event can be found at Scentsational Tanning at 305 South Minnesota Ave in St. Peter. Ask for JoDee.

We happily welcomed Hayley and Sandi for a visit to the Sanctuary on March 19. Such a fun visit we had as we toured about greeting all the horses. We are looking forward to seeing them again soon.

Sandi and Hayley found us via our Facebook page. Please join us on Facebook as we try to put a little update on the every few days.

We at Misfit Acres are looking forward to a busy, happy summer!! Please stop and meet the crew - horse love company. Please give us a call to schedule a visit soon!

From the KSTP news website - Spay Day!!!

'Spay Day' Offers Reminders to Sterilize Pets
Your dogs and cats may not be celebrating, but this Tuesday is "Spay Day" - a national reminder to get your pets spayed and neutered to help control the population of unwanted animals in the United States.
The Animal Humane Society says spaying and neutering offers health and behavioral benefits to dogs and cats in addition to reducing pet overpopulation and the number of animals euthanized in shelters. The agency says more than 70,000 dogs and cats are born in the U.S. every day and not nearly enough homes for all of them.
Minneapolis Animal Care & Control is hosting a "spay-a-thon"
Tuesday to promote the practice. Many veterinary clinics throughout the Twin Cities will also be offering the service for free on Tuesday.

Snow Snow Snow!!

Wow are we getting snow here or what! Abbey and BJ are sporting their blankets, the little horses are in the arena in their corral. Cats are tucked in the barn - well most of them. Ralph - the cat from Mapleton impound - decided he likes to live in the addition of our house. I think he loves the room service twice a day.

If you visit our Facebook page, there is a photo of Abbey in her new blanket made possible by your donations. Arrived just in time for this slice of winter!
