Adoptable Horses

As Misfit Acres does not adopt out horses, we encourage anyone considering adopting a horse - please check our friends at Rolling Rock Rescue in WI. http://www.rollingrockrescue.com/AvailHorses.htm

Beck has a number of horses looking for homes. Beck is pretty big hearted when it comes to taking in horses so she has a BUNCH of them right now. Going into winter, it would be great if many of them could find that perfect home.

Injury

This morning we discovered that Abbey had hurt her eye overnight. The upper lid has quite a gash in it as well as the area under her eye. The eye itself seems to be okay – thank goodness!! We cleaned it all up and gave her a dose of bute for the pain. She also has a scrap on one knee and one shoulder. We went through the entire pasture looking for signs of what could have happened but the only thing we found were some white facial hairs on the round bale feeder. In front of the feeder were some marks in the mud that look like hooves sliding. It appears that something startled her and she ran into the round bale feeder – maybe? We will watch her very closely and if we determine she needs more help that we can do, we will be having the doctor out to see her. Poor old girl, she has had a rough life in the past. She does not deserve to get an injury.

Urgent - please help!

Last evening we found out that our regular hay supplier has not cut any hay yet this year so when he does, the hay will be very coarse and not suitable for horses. He is uncertain if he will be cutting any more hay this year.

This puts us in a tough spot. Not only is he our major hay supplier for his good quality hay but in the past he has allowed us to pay him in payments as we got more money in.

Last year, we went through 55 big round bales and a few hundred small squares. We have purchased 250 small squares as last evening but are desperately searching for round bales to build up our winter stock.

If anyone has information on any local hay suppliers willing to work with us, please contact me at jody@misfitacres.com or 507-317-4927.

Toesis's Surgery

Toesis and Acura went to the doctor for their annual exams. Acura turned out perfect but Toesis needed some dental work. That was performed on May 7. He also had a small growth taken from his lower eye lid. He is doing well with the exception of a little too much discharge from the site of the old growth. This is being treated with medication from the doctor's office and now it looks great ! He is back to his happy ole self. Not bad at all for being almost 12 years old!!

March 24, 2010 - SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM IGIVE.COM

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM IGIVE.COM

just three short months, thousands of causes just like MISFIT ACRES have, all together, earned tens of thousands of dollars from our special challenges. The most earned by a cause was over $1,000. We're tremendously pleased that these Challenges work and we're excited that supporters like you are making it happen. So pleased that we've put together another 24 hour / $5,000 challenge.

According to the Nonprofit Finance Fund's recent survey:

* Nearly 90% of nonprofits surveyed expect 2010 to be as difficult or more difficult than 2009.
* 80% anticipate increased demand for services in 2010.
* Only 18% of organizations expect to end 2010 above break-even.
* The majority - 61% - have less than three months of cash available; 12% have none.

Together, you and iGive.com can make times a little less tough for MISFIT ACRES.

We'll donate our marketing budget, you spread the word, and MISFIT ACRES gets the money. It's that simple.

We'll give MISFIT ACRES a dollar for each person who joins iGive using the special link below and visits one store via iGive between noon Wednesday, March 24, 2010 (Chicago time) and noon Thursday, the next day.

Here's where you come in. Send your friends, family, and colleagues the following link in an e-mail, tweet it, do a Facebook posting, put up posters, shout from mountain tops (you know the drill) and let them know you think MISFIT ACRES is pretty cool and deserves their support, especially since it's free! You can even just forward this e-mail. The only way MISFIT ACRES will get new supporters and that free $1 (or more) is if you invite them.

This is the link:
http://www.igive.com/welcome/warm_reg_promo.cfm?m=353740

Make sure you tell your friends to perform a store visit, so that they earn the dollar.

5,000 new members, $5,000. No purchase necessary. That's 5,000 new members for all causes, not just yours, and it's only for 24 hours, so it's a bit of race.

It can turn into more than a dollar, much more ... if these new members search or buy something at an iGive store they'll earn much-needed money for MISFIT ACRES. Right now, we're donating a special bonus of $5 for that first purchase plus the usual percentage. Active iGive members raise an average of over $40 per year for their cause.

The details:

- Offer active between 12:00 p.m. (noon) March 24, 2010 and 11:59 a.m., March 25, 2010 (Chicago time).
- New members only (never have been an iGive member previously).
- All the normal rules of membership, searching, and purchasing apply, our site has the details.
- Once we've given away $5,000 in total, the offer ends.
- The special link and visiting a store via iGive are necessary. No link, no store visit, no $1.

That's it. We've added tons of new stuff in the last months that we want to really test out, so spreading the word helps both MISFIT ACRES and iGive. Check it out yourself at http://www.iGive.com . You may need to login first.

Yours,

Robert N. Grosshandler
Founder

March 4, 2010 - Oh Shadow!

Oh Shadow!!

Our lovely little Shadow has a sinus infection, again.
Dr. feels it is because of the Cushing's Disease that is
lowering her resistance to infections.

Well, she HATES her medicine. When she was on it before,
she was so beat down from being sick, she just went along
with it. Not now - We found out last evening how strong she
is as I got a good look at her underside from the ground. She
did not win though. We did get her medicine into her.

Hummmm, wonder what tonight's dose will bring? Another rodeo,
perhaps? Such is life!

Little Boy goes touring??

Saturday morning around 5 am Little Boy decided to go for a walk.
How he squeezed through the corral boards is beyond us - if you saw
how round he is!!

Bruce's sister Ellen was visiting us that weekend. She saw
the motion light outside the front door kept going off and on. When
she went to look at what was happening, there stood Little Boy!!

Looking at all the little hoof prints in the snow, he was visitng
Lucky and April and had been wondering around for a while.

The little stinker headed right for the gate to his pasture when Bruce
came out to get him. Looking so innocent like he really wanted to go
back in the pasture!

I guess he just wanted to be sure we were up to get
his breakfast to him on time! They do keep us jumping!

February 25, 2010 - Oh Our Augie Doggey is at it again!

Oh Our Augie Doggey is at it again!

Anyone who has met our Augie Doggey knows what a busy body he can be! He is always hiding feed pans in the pasture and if there is anything he can pull on, play with, push around - whatever, he just HAS to do it.

For anyone not in this area, the temperatures are sub zero right now. Last night, we discovered the little stinker pulled the stock tank heater out of the water tank (which is a shared tank and supplies water to 8 horses). Our large water tank was half full of water which promptly turned to solid ice !

So, we grab the buckets and start hauling water to the tank and then take buckets around to each horse to be sure they had enough. Of course they loved the personal service!

Oh Augie Doggey - you gotta love him!! LOL

February 22, 2010 - Lucky

Lucky

In the later years of her life, Lucky seems to develop laminitis right about this time of year out of now where. She skipped it for two years but this year her issues are beginning.

Some suspections are that laminitis issues on older horses can be brought on by weather but there is no scientific basis for this.

She is shedding differently this year. Lucky is a funny little horse who generally seems to grow her winter coat in the fall almost overnight and shed out in the spring very quickly but not this year.

We have been using the WellSolve LS feed on the little ponies with lamintis issues and had such great results, we will be starting Lucky on this product as well.

Wish us luck with this beautiful little girl!

Saving one horse may not make a difference in the
whole world, but it will make a world of
difference to that one horse ~ Unknown author

A story of a cat found glued to Highway 60 in the Madelia area has prompted two South Dakota people to offer a reward leading to a conviction of the person responsible for the December deed.

Timothy the cat, named by staff at the Sioux Falls, S.D., shelter where he was dropped off by Joyce Borgen, died the day before Christmas Eve. Borgen said she found the orange and white cat on the highway Dec. 18 as she was traveling to Sioux Falls from Mankato.

She didn’t have an exact location, but estimated she had been traveling for about a half hour when she saw the cat on the right shoulder of the road. Initial reports said the cat was found on I-90 near the South Dakota border, but Borgen said those reports were not accurate.

“At first I thought he was dead, but when I went by, he looked up at me,” Borgen said. “It was awfully cold outside and almost dark. He wouldn’t have made it through the night.”

Already traveling with two dogs and a bird of her own, Borgen turned around as soon as she could and returned to get the feline. It was still in the same spot and made a sound like it was in pain when she pulled it from the road. It barely moved from its spot near the heater on the floor of Borgen’s car as she continued her trip to Sioux Falls.

It’s back paws were bloody and it had “gooey stuff” all over its fur, Borgen said.

The cat was moved to a warm bathroom in the house where Borgen was staying that night.

“We warmed up some towels in a dryer,” she said. “We wrapped them around him and got him something to eat.”

She took the cat to the Second Chance Rescue Center in Sioux Falls the following day. At first, it looked like Timothy was going to make it, said Rosey Quinn, the center’s director. A foster family had taken him in and he was doing well, but he became very ill the night of Dec. 22 and died at a veterinarian’s office the next day, she said.

“The veterinarian said it was a combination of the glue and the stress and the cold,” Quinn said.

The glue wasn’t tar, but it had the same texture, she said.

An anonymous donor from Yankton, S.D., was the first to offer a reward, saying he would donate $1,000. Then another anonymous donor added $1,000.

“We just hope someone comes forward so we can figure out who did this and why they did this,” Quinn said. “Who ever did this should be held accountable. It’s a horrible thing to do to an animal.”

December 23, 2009 - Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas!

As Minnesota braces for one of the strongest snow storms in many, many years, we just wanted to take a moment from all the storm and holiday preparations to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas!!!

Bruce has been very busy at home getting all the shelters ready for the storm, we have put the little ponies inside - if we get 20" of snow, they may not be able to get around.

If you are traveling, please use extreme caution! If all predictions come true, this could be quite a danger.

Blessed Christmas !!!!

We are were able to attend, thanks to a volunteer who took care of all the critters at Misfit Acres.

We are back on course keeping up with correspondence and Christmas Newsletters will be mailed shortly.

Give to the Max Day - recap!!

Jody and Bruce...and all the critters of Misfit Acres would like to THANK all the generous donors who participated in the "Give to the Max" event on November
17th. They were happy to say that donations totalled $545!! And, the match amount is yet to be determined due to the overwhelming participation.

The goal of givemn.org and their donating partners was to provide a match of fifty cents for every dollar donated to Minnesota non profits. This event brought in more than fourteen million dollars in donations to various non profits in Minnesota. Givemn.org will be contacting each non profit shortly with this information.

We are thrilled to have been a part of this very speical opportunity. Kind of sounds like the organization name should be changed to "Minnesota Really Gives". Thank you everyone!!

November 12, 2009 - Toesis - Surgery November 11

Toesis - Surgery November 11

Toesis's surgery went very well. Dr. told us the
mass weighed 10.4# - yes, that is pounds! He
currently has a pressure wrap on his leg to help
the skin re-attach to the underlying tissue since some
excess skin had to be removed.
He also has a drain tube which will stay
in place for 5 days. The staples will need to be
removed in 2 weeks. He will have to stay at the
clinic until Friday to help keep him a little quieter
at first.

A senior blood panel was also
taken with came back great!

We can't wait to go get him!

Little Acura is
quite lost without him there and keeps looking
in all the rooms of the house for him.

November 4, 2009 - Toesis

Toesis

Many of you know that Toesis - the red Doberman - has had a lipoma on his hind leg for years. In the last two weeks, it had begun growing again and putting too much pressure on his leg causing swelling. On November 11, this beautiful boy will have surgery to remove as much as possible of this mass. He will have to stay overnite at least one nite. It will be very hard on him to be alone and equally hard for Acura to be without him. Please keep this wonderful boy in your thoughts!

October 16, 2009 - Magic

Magic

Been trying to tell you guys this but everytime I think about it I start
bawling all over again. Apparently, something scared Magic so badly
Wednesday nite he either ran into the brush pile or the old truck in the
pasture and got caught up. There is no blood on the truck so I don't
believe it was that. His left front leg is so ripped up you can see the
entire knee joint. Dr. said it was horrible. And it is. I was going to
get photos so as he heals we can watch the progress, but it is just too
awful. In all honesty I almost puked when I saw it in the daylight.

Oh the poor guy, that has to be so painful. Dr. flushed it all out, put on
antibiotic cream and bandaged it. He left us instuctions on how to treat
it and medications. I have never seen anything like
it and hope to never see it again.

Bruce found coyote tracks outside of the back side of the pasture so he is
suspecting coyotes scared him. Bruce has installed an additional motion
lite over that pasture and will probably be putting in more. He also met
up with a guy in the checkout line at TSC when he was buying more vet
wraps, who hunts coyotes and this man is coming out on Monday to scope out
the property and decide the best way to hunt them.

Dr says we will be surprised at how well Magic heals. Magic is up and
around, very perky, and only seems to limp a little. If it were a person,
they would be laid up miserably.

If you have any coyotes around your place, get rid of them as soon as you
can.

September 17, 2009 - Shadow

Shadow

Shadow seems to be doing a little better! We started her pergolide on Sep 9. Jaime and Kennedy gave her a very much needed bath on Sunday. She had a natural balance trim by our farrier on Sep 15.

That same evening when we called her doctor regarding her breathing rate, he recommended turning her back outside since the front pasture was all torn up and free of white clover and grasses. He was concerned that with the rate of her breathing that she was displaying heaves symptoms and should not be inside without a fan.

She acts very much happier to be outside with Grandma Abbey and the ponies.

Keep her in your thoughts and prayers. She is such a good girl! It is hard to see her not feeling good.

June 1, 2009 - Shadow’s First Outing

Shadow’s First Outing

Shadow did her first public appearance since her arrival in October. Shadow was the deeply-admired celebrity at a local graduation party. She climbed right in the trailer and enjoyed a few hours of giving small kids rides up and down the street while being lead safely with an adult on each side. Afterwards, no one could resist coming up to meet her and pet her.

She was an adorable little angel - a little antsy at first but after a brisk walk with Mom (and a little lecture about being good) she settled right down.

Such fun that was!!! She was quite happy to be home afterwards. You could just see her out in the pasture telling the other horses about her exciting day!.

June 1, 2009 - The Little Traveling Ponies!

The Little Traveling Ponies!

May 24 was a first for Misfit Acres! Elm Homes in Blue Earth, MN invited Dixie and Faith of Misfit Acres to be their special guests at our first “Pony Picnic”. The little minis enjoyed an awesome afternoon of pure spoiling by the consumers of Elm Homes at the Fairgrounds in Blue Earth. Picnic lunch was served to all the “human attendees” but the little ponies preferred the nice green grass!

The ponies were on their very best behavior! We brought a long a bucket of assorted brushes which all the consumers used to groom the little ones. Faith and Dixie just froze in their tracks when the brushing began. When we got back to the farm, both ponies laid out flat for a well deserved nap. It’s a lot of work being the stars of the day!

It was a wonderful afternoon for everyone!!!!

May 22, 2009 - Toesis & Acura

Toesis & Acura

Misfit Acres is well known for horses but it is also home to two rescued Dobermans. On May 13, the pups had their annual exams. We are delighted to say that they are both clear of heartworm and lymes disease! We are always concerned about Acura since she came to Misfit Acres with heartworm and had to undergo the major kill. Both pups are on heart worm prevention medicine year round.

Toesis is having a little deal with his thyriod and had to have his medication adjusted. He also has developed a growth on his paw which he will not leave alone. We have been wrapping it and when we are around him, he leaves it alone. But not when we are not around. This may lead to having to put a cone on him so he cannot pester this spot until it is gone.

Acura has no new troubles! She just wags and wags and wags her tail!!

May 22, 2009 - October Fundraiser 2009

Silent Auction items are desperately needed! Items do not have to be only horse-related as our past auctions offer a variety of interests - something for everyone!

Please consider donating an item to this awesome event to benefit the Sanctuary Horses of Misfit Acres as proceeds are dedicated to their care.

Volunteers are also needed. Providing we have enough volunteer help, we would like to run a "Kids Corner" featuring simple craft/art projects.

Feb 5th, 2008 - Fundraiser for Steele County Posse Member (Minnesota)

Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction for Deb Schultz

Family and friends of Deb Schultz of Owatonna have scheduled a Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday,
February 10, 2008, at the Owatonna VFW from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Along with the dinner, we will hold a Silent Auction, with all proceeds going to Deb and her family.

Deb is a life-long member of the Owatonna community and has been active in many equine groups in the area, such as the Owatonna Saddle Club and Steele County Mounted Posse. For several years, Deb also operated a western wear and tack shop here in Owatonna; Deb’s Saddles and Such was located on east Main Street. In addition to many years as an active member of the Steele County Mounted Posse, Deb has coordinated numerous annual training exercises for the Posse members and their horses. These training scenarios have been utilized to help prepare this group for many “real life” events that have occurred throughout our county as well as neighboring counties.

Deb has been dealing with health issues over the past several years and recently has been moved to the Homestead Hospice House to give her the care she needs. This event is to help Deb and her family fund the resources to cover medical expenses incurred during her long illness.

We thank you for your generosity by supporting this event.
** Thrivent Financial will supplement the funds received from this event **

For questions regarding the event, please contact Joe Schwering at 507.456.1559.
Cash donations are being accepted at United Prairie Bank “For the Benefit of Deb Schultz.”
For donations to the Silent Auction, please contact Jodie Briant at 507.330.3697.

Nov 18th, 2007 - Let That Pony Run

Yesterday was one of the worst days of our lives. The vet was here and we helped Cookie to the Rainbow Bridge. We buried her here on the property.

We have been waiting for her to tell us when she had had enough. She laid down on Friday morning and had not gotten up. She lost all interest in her feed and hay. She would not drink any water.

We had 11 girl scouts out here yesterday afternoon and she had no interest in the kids. We took all the indicators to be her way of telling us she was ready.

After we called the doctor I went to the barn to tell her. She reached up with her little nose and touched my nose. I am certain it was a "Thank you".

Misfit Acres now has it's littlest Angel.

Jul 26th, 2007 - Abbey & Tara

This is an urgent plea for help from Misfit Acres - we normally do not make requests like this, but this is a different situation.

On the evening of July 25, Tara and Abbey arrived at Misfit Acres through a group of caring volunteers. Tara, a 20+ yo Arab, and Abbey, a 30+ yo Arab, were no longer wanted by their previous owner. Both girls are terribly in need of weight, vet care, and farrier work. The mares will be temporarily housed with us until they are strong enough to be placed in loving homes - but this going to take a while.

This is an appeal to everyone reading this announcement. We are in desperate need of donations of cash, hay, and senior feed in order to help these girls regain their health. These girls deserve a chance to recover. How could we turn them away in their time of need? Please open up your hearts and help us help Abbey and Tara. No donation is too small.

Photos will be coming soon on our website.

May 16th, 2007 - Thank You Lake Crystal Welcome Memorial Students!!!!!

There is a very special group of young people we would like to tell you about.

On Thursday evening, May 10, Bruce and I were still reeling from losing Trixie the night before. As you know, this has been a hard year for Misfit Acres as we have lost three beautiful horses. It was one of those times where we just do a lot of contemplating that maybe this is just too hard and maybe we shouldn’t do this anymore. I don’t think either of us could really give this up, but the sadness of losing “one of the kids” is pretty strong. Anyway, the phone rang about that time. It was an instructor from Lake Crystal Welcome Memorial School. She explained to Bruce that the students - K - 6 gr - had seen the article about the Sanctuary Horses of Misfit Acres in January. These young people took it upon themselves to make a real difference. They organized a “Pennies for Ponies” drive in their community with all donations going to Misfit Acres. She would be sending a cashier’s check for over $423 for the horses. This arrived on Tuesday.

I swore that Jasmine was behind the man we met at the airport (see “Very Kind Man” entry). And now I am just as certain that Trixie was behind this act of kindness.

Apr 23rd, 2007 - Very Kind Man!

This is still unbelievable for us.

The nite before we left on the trip and Jazzy was having trouble, she stumbled and stepped on my foot.

Of course, at the airport the next day you have to take your shoes off to go thru the security stuff. I was talking to Bruce as we were in line telling him I was not sure I could get my shoe back on afterwards since it had taken quite a bit to get it on in the first place. There was man in line behind us kind of watching. Bruce told him the horse had stepped on my foot the nite before and it was pretty sore.

Later on as we were at the gate waiting to board, a man said "hey how's that foot?" It was the man Bruce had spoken to earlier. I told him not very good! He was asking about what kind of horses we had and how many, etc. I had some Misfit Acres brochures in my bag and handed him one. He was really interested in it. He asked about the horse that stepped on me and we told him we had to put her down - course I am such a softy, you can imagine the tears welling up. Anyway, just as we were to get on the plane, this man handed Bruce some papers. He said he travels for business all the time and gets these free drink vouchers from the airlines and he wanted us to have these. Just as we were all three stepping away to get on the plane, he handed Bruce a rolled up check and said "Take care of the farm". Bruce gave him our most sincere thank you but did not get a chance to look at the check until we were seated. It was for $300.

On the flight we had some drinks. A little later the flight attendant came back and handed Bruce a $20 bill. She said the black man in first class had paid for the drinks that we had already bought and that she was to give Bruce back any money he had spent on drinks. If there was anything further that we wanted, she was to come to him for payment and not take our money.

They were not allowing anyone into first class that did not have a seat so we did not get a chance to personally thank him. The flight attendant told Bruce that the man used to be a professional football player.

We were hoping to catch him at the baggage pick up but he must not have had any luggage to pick up. We didn't see him again.

Pretty Awesome - huh??

Apr 23rd, 2007 - Jasmine - January 9, 2005 - April 12, 2007

Jazzy had been in the barn after her heart attack in January. The vet advised us to keep her on stall rest for a while. Our pastures were so rough from the mud, then cold and then all of the mud again. We had decided she was better off in the barn for a while with her bad leg. She really didn't like being in the barn and loved her afternoon walks around the place. We opened the windows on nicer days, left the radio on, and had a fluorescent lite on at all times. Cookie goes to the barn also over the winter months since she does not get around very well.

Since she really didn't like the barn, we were planning to put Jazzy in the arena while we were gone on the trip. We were hoping the ground would dry out and Bruce could take the skidloader and level everything out in the pastures when we got back. I emptied the arena all out, tore down the round pen, got the water ready for her, hay down, gate across the door so she would have the choice of looking outside if she wanted. But when I got her up there, she was almost unable to walk but insisted on trying to trot around. Almost like she really didn't care about herself any more - just kept trying to trot. It appeared as though she must have stumbled and fell and tore all the ligaments loose on her knee maybe while getting back up. Her left front knee has been arthritic ever since we got her but had been getting worse all along. Now it was really bad. Very swollen and bowed to the point it looked like it could just buckle.

We knew all along that there would come a time she would tell us that she had had enough Her leg was so bowed and seemed so painful. Jazzy was late twenties. We talked about it between the three of us, Derek was there with us. It just seemed like she was telling us that was enough. We made the decision to call the dr to put her down and end all the suffering. I kissed her and held her the whole time. Not really sure but I think the dr left around 8 or so.

Beautiful baby - running free with Dandy at last.

Earth Day is April 22 - a very good time to remind all of us that recycling is extremely important to our environment. There are hundreds of aluminum cans and 20 oz pop bottles that can be collected and recycled for the Sanctuary Horses of Misfit Acres just laying in the ditches.

Please check our "Recycling for Horses" page for more information on how trash can be turned into funding dollars for Misfit Acres.

Jan 29th, 2007 - Saturday's Miracle!!

Nine of us saw a miracle before our eyes on Saturday.

Montana arrived on January 27. He is a big gorgeous boy - very friendly. We were confident that he was going to be the perfect companion for our lonely Jasmine. We walked the horses around in the pasture, let them sniff each other and then walked around again. Things looked like they were going well so we turned them loose. He and Jasmine approached each other and had kind of a little tiff -no big deal. Jasmine suddenly ran over to the fence line by Trixie and Augie. What happened next stunned us all. She climbed up a snow drift and started moving her front legs. It looked for all the world like she was going to try to jump the fenced to get in with Trixie. I ran between the fence line and the snow trying to turn her around away from the fence. Jasmine has never made any attempt to jump - she has a very arthritic front knee. She scrambled in the snow and fell. She did not move. We ran to help her up but she would not even try. Bruce got the skid loader and moved more snow away so we could turn her over. There is a slight hill in the pasture and we wanted to have her attempt to get up on the downhill slant rather than the uphill. She many several attempts to get up after we got the snow moved away. She just could not do it. We let her have rest breaks, we covered her with blankets and tons of encouragement. She started to get very cold - too cold. Our neighbors and Bruce rigged up a sling, got this under her, and raised her to her feet with the skidloader. We (under telephone guidance from our vet) loosened all pressure from the strapping but did not remove it for several minutes. . Once Jasmine realized she was up on her own feet, she got very perky! The guys took the straps off of her slowly and we walked her to the arena. We had been talking with our vet who was on another farm call delivering some calves. He arrived around 5:15. She had already been on her feet for over an hour. Her body temperature was still only 96 degrees. That little girl was cold! Dr did treat for colic as a precautionary measure.

The conclusion seems to be that Jasmine may have had a mild heartattack. This would explain why she made no effort to move when she fell in the snow. Her heart rhythm is not like it should be, but rather skips a little. We are uncertain how long it has been this way. Nothing was noticed this summer when her teeth were floated and the two bad ones removed.

Yesterday we got a small dose of Ace promazine for her from the dr to help keep her from getting so worked up. We took her outside. Crystal and Derek walked her Montana around the pasture for a while. She and Montana did eat together near the fence line for little while.

We are trying to re-introduce them slowly. Maybe everything was just too much for her? Losing Dandy, Montana coming, we don't know. She and Trixie and Augie have kind of been bonding over the fence line since Dandy is gone. Maybe she was jealous because Montana had been over there. We really don't know.

Jasmine is in the barn right now. The dr thought it may be best for her to keep from getting too worked up outside just yet. She hates to be inside too it is a tough call.

We are just so thankful that she is here. No one in the pasture thought we would ever see her upright again. She was giving up. We took turns making sure her head was kept up. Everyone was rubbing her legs trying to warm her. To see the look in her eyes when she realized she was standing, moving one hoof around on the ground - that was a true miracle.

Nov 16th, 2006 - Please Read - How you can help

As a non profit, we are always looking for ways to bring in $$ - any amount. Here are a few ways you can help -

Please use Goodsearch.com (www.goodsearch.com)for all your internet searches. You will be asked to designate a charity. Please select Misfit Acres. By doing so each time you do an internet search one penny will go into Misfit Acres Account. You can even check the balances your self. And as you will see, it adds up!

Please consider helping with our recycling programs. We recycle inkjet cartridges, laser cartridges, and cell phones. Each of these programs has prepaid shipping labels that can be sent to you at no charge to submit your recycling and have the donation credited to Misfit Acres Account.

Please consider signing up at www.terracycle.net to particiapte in the Bottle Brigade. This recycler sends you boxes which hold 70 20 oz pop bottles. Peal the label from the bottle, tape up the box when full and give the box to any UPS driver. When you sign up on the recyclers site, they will ask you which charity you wish to support.

For those of you in our area, please consider dropping off your empty aluminum cans. This is also another great way to help. We make an annual run to the recycling yard in the spring, but collect cans all year round. We hope to be putting up a drop box area in the south east corner of our property soon.

Also, please check our Affilates page - maybe some of your favorite retailers are among those affilates listed.
